Santa Monica Mountains Workshop Review
If you’re a nature photographer residing in Ventura or Los Angeles counties, and surrounding areas, the ‘Masters Program’ Landscape Photography Workshop held annually during early December in conjunction with the National Park Service - Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area, the California State Parks, and the University of California Los Angeles Stunt Ranch Reserve is a gem that’s awaits you right outside your backdoor.
The instructors are award-winning landscape photographer, Tom Gamache, and landscape photographer and educator, Van Webster. Gamache is the photographer/co-author, along with western writer Matthew Jaffe, of the highly acclaimed book Range on the Edge-The Santa Monica Mountains” published by Angel City press. Webster is founder and president of Webster Communications, a full service media production company serving the broadcast, business, and educational communities.
Susan Lambert, a workshop attending photographer, said, "The program is unique. The instructors took us far beyond the basics and taught us how to look in and around the landscape in order to create artful photographs."
Each day started and ended with early morning and late afternoon field sessions. Both instructors openly shared their passion and knowledge of the principles of landscape art that the masters have successful used for centuries.
Carol Felixson, who was taking the workshop for the second time, said, “This workshop built on my prior experiences and increased my appreciation and skills as a photographer. How I see - has been significantly enhanced, whether I take photos, or not.”
The program was intense and the camaraderie infectious. The Digital Camera Boot Camp exercises jump-started everyone … getting them off their camera’s auto setting and put them in personal control of their creative image making.
“The information was detailed and covered every aspect from artistic composition to technical execution. The historic to modern day paintings and photographs examples were outstanding,” said Jasmine Swope a participating workshop photographer.
