Santa Monica Mountains
A 'MASTERS PROGRAM' PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
including ‘DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY BOOT CAMP’
December 2 - 4, 2016 – Friday to Sunday
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area
Sponsored by the Mountains Restoration Trust
A 3 DAY 'Masters Program' Workshop.
"I wanted to tell you about an amazing photography workshop I just finished. It's a landscape photography class taught with an emphasis on the compositions and values that historical landscape painters used. Most of us painters use photo references and I took the class to learn how to make better photographs for this purpose.
The composition lessons alone made the workshop worthwhile. I got so much out of the in-the-field work and how to use the camera to emphasize values, etc.
The instructors are 2 master photographers, Tom Gamache and Van Webster, who are also excellent teachers. We got plenty of individual attention and, due to the personalities of the instructors, the group shared quite a bit of camaraderie. I think every painter and photographer, no matter what his/her level is, could get a lot out of their workshops."
- Kris S., Los Angeles, CA
Wandering Around Outdoors (‘WAO’) workshops have been designed for photographers of all levels and experience to help them unlock the mysteries of successful landscape photography and their digital camera.
This four day ‘Wandering Around Outdoors' Landscape Photography ‘Masters Program’ Workshop includes ‘Digital Photography Boot Camp’ which will help you take your camera off “Auto” and make “eye catching” landscape photographs. This unique workshop offers photographers of all levels the best fall colors and most dramatic light of the year in the country’s largest urban park. (Workshop reviews and reports)
Workshop co-instructor Tom Gamache is the award winning chronicler of the beauty, color and moods of the Santa Monica Mountains. To view examples of his work, see “The Santa Monica Mountains - Range on the Edge” from Angel City Press. Join Tom and Van for an exciting, fun and friendly learning experience capturing the peaks, valleys, oak woodlands and fall color of their beloved Santa Monica Mountains just as the “Masters” would have.
‘Masters Program’ 3 Day Weekend Schedule
including ‘ Digital Photography Boot Camp’ (DPBC)
"Tom and Van provided just the right mix of lecture and field practice. I am so happy that I attended. I always wondered why one image of mine was successful and another not so. I now know how to select, compose and capture a subject so I will be satisfied.
The instructors are both very capable photographers who openly share their knowledge while accommodating photographers with different skill levels. We learned much more than we could have from any book or video. Everyone in the workshop went home with a much larger toolbox of ideas and concepts that will help enhance their work. I certainly recommend their workshops to all who want to understand first - what constitutes a great photograph and secondly - how to create one."
- Steve F., Thousand Oaks, CA
The ‘Masters Program' is an eye opening exploration of the same compositional rules and guidelines of landscape art that the masters have used for centuries. The information in this program will forever change how you create photographs and, in effect, view the world around you. You will learn how to directly apply the principles of landscape art in your photographic images. Included in the ‘Master’s Program’ is extensive documentation that compiles and codifies decades of research and writing by Tom and Van on the essence of landscape art.
This special 3 day ‘Masters Program’ Landscape Photography Workshop begins on Friday and continues to Sunday with detailed daily lectures and examples from the history of landscape art and the instructors substantial archive. It is a rich source of artistic lessons and inspiration. Many little known techniques as well as professional photography secrets are shared. Morning, afternoon and evening in-the-field sessions complete the weekend.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the Santa Monica Mountains “Masters Program” and “Digital Boot Camp”. Lessons learned during the 4 day workshop will follow me wherever I go. Tom and Van provided a ton of information and ideas in a very casual yet dynamic way. I highly recommend the workshop."
- Garry W., Agoura Hills, CA
‘Digital Photography Boot Camp’ (DPBC) which runs concurrently within the ‘Masters Program’ is a friendly but intensive program in digital photography technology with an emphasis on giving the photographer the knowledge and confidence to take their digital camera off of the “Auto” setting and gain control of their image making. Participants will be taken step by step through a series of exercises that will explore the dials, buttons and menus of their camera systems. Just like learning a sport or a performing art, using the camera is a skill that needs to be practiced in order to be mastered. DPBC gives photographers and painters the exercises and experiences necessary to make better art.
Tuition: $595.00 (minimum 8) Registration deadline – when all seats are filled. Board, Room, Transportation, Park Entrance and Use Fees are not included.
